MALINDI GREEN TOWN MOVEMENT - MALINDI KENYA

ENDA RUP, Habitat and Environment Commitee (HEC), august 1998

Summary

The Malindi Green Town Movement is one of the 15 voluntary action groups that developed from the " Environmental and Urban Development Training Project ", informally called the Green Town Project. It is hosted by the Ministry of the Local Authorities, and founded by the Royal Netherlands Government. In 1997, the 15 Green Town Action Groups formed a national association: the Kenya Green Town Partnership Association.

As a result, the purpose of the Malindi Green Town Movement should be seen in the frame of the overall project " Environment and Urban Development Training Project " and the Kenya Green Town Partnership Association, who have as objective:

"A healthy, efficient, attractive urban environment providing it's inhabitants with basic needs such as water, food, energy and shelter ".

The Movement fulfils a " watch-dog " function, alerting the residents on environmental dangers and, pressurizing the Municipality to take action.

Indeed, the Malindi Green Town Movement carried out effective public awareness campaigns through public meetings and official clean-up days, involving renowned dignitaries and members of the public, radio, television, and newspaper coverage.

In the same way, the movement was able to convince the Municipality of the benefits of full partnership in the environmental management of the town. Examples of partners are the Local Authority Environment and Public Health Committee, the District Environment Committee, and the District Development Committee.

The Malindi Green Town Movement was presented as " Best Practice " in Local Government in Istanbul during the Habitat II Conference.
